A Letter To My Daughter

August 3, 2021

Dear Marley,

As I kneel and watch you play, I can only bring myself to complete gratitude and humbleness. I never knew in just a short amount of time, you would have these effects on us. When we found out about you, we already knew you would light up our world. And now you’re here, crossing the threshold of your first birthday. I thought it would be fitting to write a letter to you, my daughter.

It’s crazy to me that only a short time ago, it was just Daddy and me. Now that you’ve entered our world, it has not been the same. Life has so much more meaning now that you’re here. As I watch you explore and play, I can’t help but smile as you discover the ways of life. I hope throughout our time together, you’ll feel our love, you’ll understand our guidance, and sometimes even our discipline. You’ll look back and say my parents were walking with me every step of the way.

Letter To My daughter

Follow God

First and foremost follow God’s heart. Open yourself to his will and his way for your life. Lean your ear to his chest and hear his heartbeat for your life and the steps he’ll have you to take. He has great plans for you and has something very special for you to do. Whatever He puts in your heart, we’ll be here to pray for you and give you wisdom along the way. I hope you never question His love for you. As the scripture says:

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous.” - Joshua 1:8

You Are Strong & Capable

Please do not let anyone ever tell you otherwise. God has equipped you with the very strength and power you need to do what he’s called you to. You are righteous and clothed in dignity too. Just like Proverbs 31, you were created with many gifts and talents. And yes, you can do them all.

"She equips herself with strength [spiritual, mental, and physical fitness for her God-given task] and makes her arms strong." - Proverbs 31:17

Don’t Fear

There will be moments in your life, where you’ll feel scared and or intimidated whether it be in school, or your job. But please don’t be afraid. God has given you the courage to tackle any daunting situation or task. If you remember that God is with you, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

"I’m filled with joy as I think of your strong faith that was passed down through your family line. It began with your grandmother Lois, who passed it on to your dear mother, Eunice. And it’s clear that you too are following in the footsteps of their godly example. I’m writing to encourage you to fan into a flame and rekindle the fire of the spiritual gift God imparted to you when I laid my hands upon you. For God will never give you the spirit of fear, but the Holy Spirit who gives you mighty power, love, and self-control." - 2 Timothy 1:4-6

You’re Valuable

Your worth is not tied to what you do or how you look but to who you are. Your worth and value were given to you before you were even born. Before Daddy and I thought of you, God knew you and knew who you would become. You are not just our daughter but more importantly, you are a child of God. What God has placed inside of you was for the betterment of others; for the glory of God. You’re valuable to your family, your friends, God, and the good things he’s called you to.

"But you are God’s chosen treasure—priests who are kings, a spiritual “nation” set apart as God’s devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience his marvelous light, and now he claims you as his very own. He did this so that you would broadcast his glorious wonders throughout the world." - 1 Peter 2:9

There are times when I look back on the day you were born and still remember every single detail. You have truly changed our lives. God knew we needed you and He knew the world needed you too. There’s so much I want to say to you that this tiny little letter can’t hold but I’ll leave you with this. As I end a letter to my daughter I want to tell you; I thank God for you and your purpose in our family. Keep growing, keep playing, and keep exploring but in all, you do keep God in your gaze.

With love,

Mommy
